Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin’

Friday, November 30th, 2007

My team, the Dallas Cowboys are having an above average season. Last night was admittedly the biggest game of the year. It pitted the 10-1 Cowboys against the 10-1 Green Bay packers. Can you tell by the picture below who won the game?

It feels good to be on this side of the win column!

Last Wednesday, a Texas weather change was in full effect. We dropped 40 degrees in 12 hours.

When I was walking into Fry’s the flags whipping in the wind told the story.

Giving Thanks

We had wonderful and relaxing and tiring Thanksgiving festivities this past weekend.

First, we spent some time at Pops and Nana’s house (Kitz and Sheri’s) on Thursday. This year, we decided to run/walk in a neighborhood 5K. Pete and Sara, being avid runners, somehow convinced us all that this was a good idea even though the temperature was 40 and the activity actually required physical effort. Nevertheless, we had fun. Pete finished first overall while setting a new personal record and Sara was the first woman to finish. The rest of us meandered across the line at our own pace :)

The rest of the day was spent playing, eating, watching football and playing games. Thanks Pops and Nana for a great time! (I will post more pictures later.)

Friday, we played our annual “Walk Off the Turkey” Disc Golf round in Denton. Pops, Jim, Zach and I braved the cool weather to chunk some plastic.

Sunday afternoon, we had Grandma, Dad and Jessica over for more good eating. It was wonderful to have my 90 year old Grandmother with us for another day of food and fellowship. Thank you to Dad for a wonderful bird and several wonderful fixin’s.

I thank God everyday that he has blessed me with such a wonderful and loving family. Much love to all.

Ashton taught Parker how to “Nah Nanny Boo Boo.” Though crass in many social circles, it’s the cutest thing ever!

Thanksgiving Trivia

This from my Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Calendar:

In 1917 cranberry grower Elizabeth Lee of New Egypt, New Jersey, was stuck with a lot of bruised, undesirable cranberries. Rather than throw them away, as she usually did, this time she decided to cook them with sugar and spices. Result: a sweet and sour cranberry jelly that she sold as Bog Sweet Cranberry Sauce. The product caught on in New Jersey, and Lee went on to form the Ocean Spray company, which today is the largest producer of cranberry products in the United States.

Mmm…cranberry sauce.

Lewisville Open - Plaque

Monday, November 19th, 2007

I posted about my exciting win at the Lewisville Open last weekend. The plaque that I won is proudly displayed on one of my bookshelves at work. I snapped a picture of it today so that you may share in my excitement.

Dynamic Discs Lewisville Open

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Last weekend, I played in another local disc golf tournament. This one was another four round tournament (two rounds on Saturday and two rounds on Sunday) that took place at the two Lewisville, TX disc golf courses. I was excited about this tournament because I wanted to see if my 8th place finish at the Mr. Jim’s Carrollton Open in September was indicitive of how I could finish in the Intermediate division on a regular basis.

The first round took place at L.L. Woods which is a more open course with a few long holes. My very first shot was long enough and landed close to the basket but the skip took the disc out of bounds… NOT a good way to start. I settled down and got a birdie a few holes later and felt good about getting the stroke back. The rest of the round was steady with only one other bogey but a few of more birdies. I finished the round strong at three under par and ended up being able to be in the second group of players for the afternoon round.

The afternoon round was at Lake Park which is traditionally one of my toughest courses. I wanted to play smart and only take birdies when I had a good chance. On the second hole we played, my drive hit and fell behind a tree about 70 feet short of the basket. I pulled out a putter disc to try to throw around the tree toward the basket. For whatever reason, the throw went awry and ended up flying left and into the lake. I took an out of bounds two over par on the hole…again, I was not starting strong. A few holes later, I hit another couple of trees and got another two over par. This round, though, I did not have as many birdies and could only make up a few of the strokes that I lost on my melt down holes. I finished the round at five over par (eight strokes worse than my morning round).

On Sunday morning, I was pleased to see that, despite my less than stellar round, I was still in the second group. We played the Lake Park course first so my goal was to eliminate the two over par holes and play smart. I had a much better round, got my birdies and ended up at two under par on one of the toughest courses that I normally play. But, the wind was picking up and at the more open LL Woods course, things would get interesting.

When I got to the LL Woods course, I found that my strong round in the morning had moved me into a tie for first place and into the Leader’s group. All I had to do was beat the people on my card, hope that no one behind me had an out-of-site round, and beat the wind at it’s own game. I started strong with a few birdies in the first few short holes and then went out of bounds a couple of times…still I was comfortable. When the guy in that I was tied with had a few drives that were beaten down and back by the wind, I thought I might be in a good spot but, without any kind of leader board, I was not positive. I finished the round with some strong drives on the long holes and ended up at only one over par. I really felt like I had a chance to finish very high.

Back at the tournament headquarters, the long wait for results seemed to drag on. At last, they were posted and I hurried up there to find that I had indeed finished very high…in fact, I got FIRST PLACE in my division. I was so excited about my first tournament win. My prize was $100 worth of merchandise which I used to get new discs and a collared golf shirt. I also received a plaque from the tournament directors to celebrate my win.

Check the reults here.

I cannot wait for my next chance to play a tournament like this. Much thanks to Dynamic Discs and the City of Lewisville for putting on a great tournament.

mat(phone)pic - Saved

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

I spent the night at my Grandma’s house to assist her after a recent fall. As I was sitting on her couch, I noticed a rolled up piece of paper on the coffee table. The picture was this:

I have no idea where the picture came from or what the meaning is (I have yet to ask Grandma.) It shows a picture of a St. Bernard dog who has seemingly just rescued a little girl from drowning. The dog gazes expectantly up to the clouded heavens. The caption that is printed under the strange picture is simply, “Saved.”
