Currently Listening:

Artist: Chris Tomlin
Album: See The Morning

Creativity: 2
The newest offering by one of the foremost modern worship leaders is very similar in feel to his past albums; at times almost formulaic. The formula of big intros then muted verses leading to big choruses is one that, even though predictable, has worked for Tomlin and it works well here too.

Lyrics: 4
Simple yet introspective, worshipful lyrics are often thought provoking. Most songs have catchy, sing-along phrases. No doubt a few of these tunes will be heard soon from a worship team near you.

Approachability: 3
At first listen, the similarities to previous Tomlin albums distracted from what are several very good songs. Let God Arise begins with a unique acoustic guitar riff, kicks in with a four-on-the-floor bass drum kick, then leads to a juiced up chorus with which you cannot help but tap a toe. Everlasting God is a catchy mid-tempo offering that may be the best song on the album. These two, put together, are the best two song worship set of any album in 2006.

Musicianship: 3
Tomlin’s vocal range is one to be admired; soft when appropriate, soaring at other times. Drums are delivered solidly and creatively by Travis Nunn without being destracting. Electric guitar riffs are often too “Contemporary Christian” for my liking.
