A Tough Break

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Our family has been preparing all week for our much anticipated annual trip to my Aunt and Uncle’s lake house in Arkansas. This is a great time of splashing in the water, jet skiing, cliff jumping, and etc. We leave on Sunday.

So the timing could almost not be worse for one of our children to break his arm but sure enough, Wyatt did. He was playing outside on the playground that we built and, like so many times before, jumped off of the top of the slide. True, this is not the purpose of said slide but our rambunctious six-year-old has never been one to play it safe. While jumping, he seemingly over-rotated and landed leaning forward. To catch himself, he put is left arm down and it, absorbing the entire weight of his body and the momentum of the jump, could not bear the load.

He came inside the house complaining that he bumped his head but all the while, he was holding his arm. Over the next 15 minutes, Kara put ice on it and checked it and prayed that is was not a break. Then to the doctor, where Nana works, for the x-ray. It confirmed the worse; both bones in his left arm were broken right above the wrist. One bone had a buckle break, one a clean break (both common in six-year-olds.)

This morning, Wyatt got a hard cast. He chose blue to match his Superman swimsuit. Luckily, an extra $20 bought a waterproof option for the cast so Wyatt will still be able to swim and enjoy our lake trip. All will be well after all and we will, again, survive the small bump in the road.

Game 6

Friday, June 30th, 2006

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Game 6 of the NBA finals in person with two of my best and lifelong friends to watch our lifelong favorite team. Thanks to some forward thinking by my friend Brent Dunn, a willingness to fly in from DC by my friend Jeremy Haile, and a small bit of coin by me, we had a chance, literally, of a lifetime.

After a stop at the Stoneleigh Pea for a burger (subpar by their standards), we headed over the to the arena.

Dallas was decked out and it was very exciting to be a participant in the festivities.

Click the picture to see that there is a huge sign on a downtown building.

Once there, the arena was rocking to try to help the Mavs bring home a victory and even the series.

As the game wore on the Mavs started to see thier lead dwindle then disappear. With just under a minute, the game was a three-pointer from being tied.

In the end, it was not to be. The three-pointer that could have tied it was off the mark, the time was not enough, the Mavs saw defeat and saw the trophy lifted by another team.

I sat and watched the trophy presentation. I took my medicine. It will only make me stronger as a fan. I will cheer louder next season. I will watch one more possession in real time on my TiVo during the season. I will attend the home opener in person. We will be back. And I hope to be there when they bring it home.

After the game, sad faces but a great time was had in spite of the game’s outcome.

Go Mavs…in the 2006-2007 season.

Game 5

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

A pivitol game five saw Jerry Stackhouse suspended a game due to the hard foul on Shaq. This is the same foul that prompted Shaq to say that his kids tackle him harder.

Despite being down a man, the game should have gone to the Mavs…it didn’t. On a call that will live in infamy, Wade, after magically and wonderfully splitting a high double team, then another, then an acrobatic move, was allowed to shoot two free throws with 1.9 seconds on the clock. I say allowed because the foul was called on Dirk who went out of his way to avoid fouling during the play. According to the picture below, if there was a foul call, it should have gone to Harris.

Regardless of the call, however, the Mavs did not take care of business in a way that would have prevented the refs from being in a position to affect the outcome of the game.

Game 4

Monday, June 26th, 2006

A let down game that allowed the Heat to tie the series…I cannot believe what I am seeing.

After the game, Shaq said, his daughters tackle him harder than Stackhouse did. This was the only highlight in a blowout.

Go Mavs…please.

Mavs 2 - Heat 2

Game 3

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

D(hope-I-spell-your-name-right)yane Wade went off for 42 and a huge fourth quarter and the Heat were able to squeak out the win.

While the Heat are now only one game from tying the series, you have to feel like the game was more lost by the Mavs than won by the Heat.

Mavs 2 - Heat 1

Game 2

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

The Mavs made a statement with a convincing win where they lead most of the game.

Shaq was held to his lowest point total EVER in a playoff game.

Mavs 2 - Heat 0

Game 1

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Jason Terry with 32 HUGE points on a night when Dirk and JHo were off.
