A Tough Break
Friday, June 30th, 2006Our family has been preparing all week for our much anticipated annual trip to my Aunt and Uncle’s lake house in Arkansas. This is a great time of splashing in the water, jet skiing, cliff jumping, and etc. We leave on Sunday.
So the timing could almost not be worse for one of our children to break his arm but sure enough, Wyatt did. He was playing outside on the playground that we built and, like so many times before, jumped off of the top of the slide. True, this is not the purpose of said slide but our rambunctious six-year-old has never been one to play it safe. While jumping, he seemingly over-rotated and landed leaning forward. To catch himself, he put is left arm down and it, absorbing the entire weight of his body and the momentum of the jump, could not bear the load.
He came inside the house complaining that he bumped his head but all the while, he was holding his arm. Over the next 15 minutes, Kara put ice on it and checked it and prayed that is was not a break. Then to the doctor, where Nana works, for the x-ray. It confirmed the worse; both bones in his left arm were broken right above the wrist. One bone had a buckle break, one a clean break (both common in six-year-olds.)
This morning, Wyatt got a hard cast. He chose blue to match his Superman swimsuit. Luckily, an extra $20 bought a waterproof option for the cast so Wyatt will still be able to swim and enjoy our lake trip. All will be well after all and we will, again, survive the small bump in the road.
