YES!

They did it! The little-Mavs-who-could overcame the Spurs in the best playoff series I have ever seen. Every game was close, every shot was big, every defensive stop was monstrous.

There was, however, no play bigger than this: Dirk to the rim for the three point play in the closing seconds.

Big Time!

A great quote by Bob Sturm, a Dallas sports radio host on The Ticket:

That win was not for a championship. I contend that it may be for something more valuable than that in many respects. This win was for anyone who has called the Mavericks soft. This win was for anyone that said to wait for the playoffs and we will see the Mavericks exposed yet again. This win was for anyone who said that Mavericks would have to beat the Spurs in the playoffs. This win was for those who thought that Dirk was never going to be able to rise up and be the superstar that they needed. This win was for Jason Terry’s career. This win was for all those who wish failure on Mark Cuban. This win was for those who hung in there.

On to the Western Conference Finals where they willl meet their old buddy Steve Nash and the Suns.

Another nail-biter, literally…I have nubs!

Game 5 is Wednesday with the Mavs having a chance to close it out.

Jason Terry was clutch down the stretch.

Happy Mother’s Day…

…to the love of my life…

I would have no other mother for my children!

Songwriting Process - Developing a Chorus

Monday, May 1st, 2006

After letting the “thought” of the song bounce around for a couple of days (partly because I have three kids and a full time job, and partly because it’s Mavericks and Stars season) I sat down with my guitar to put chords to the tune.

G is my default chord. Kara asked me the other day, “What do you always play when you first pick up your guitar?” The answer is G. This is where I started. The rhythm in my head was kind of a boom-tap (like a country song) so, as a former drummer, the rhythm of the strum came somewhat easily.

I knew that the words I recorded on my Pocket PC that Sunday were going to be the chorus so all I needed to do then was come up with a third line of lyrics…easier said than done. What you hear in the below link is not what it will be going forward but the phrasing was, at least, there.

Also, you will notice a kind of experimentation with my guitar; walking in the bass, mixing up the strum, etc. At this point, I am just trying to feel my way in a musical darkness with any number of doors through which to go. Choosing one that sounds good is the challenge (and not one, I might add, that I have perfected.)

A verse is still to come…
